How to help your child before starting school.


  • name EVERYTHING.
  • practise getting dressed
  • practise putting on shoes and socks
  • practise putting on a coat.
  • teach how to toilet independently 
  • help to recognise their name (lower case letters not capitals)
  • talk about letter sounds not names.
  • share stories and books.
  • sing songs and nursery rhymes
  • let your child experience losing a game
  • practise taking turns/ waiting for a turn  
Travelling to and from School 

Children are encouraged to walk, cycle or scoot to school. Incentives are available to reinforce this message. Parents should not bring cars onto the school campus at any time. This is in line with clear signage at the bottom of the campus road.

What I need to bring
  • Book bag
  • Coat – we go outside every day
  • Hat and gloves when cold
  • Sun hat when sunny 
  • Lunchbox (if staying to lunch)
The School Day


Monday 6th September onwards

8.45 am - Start of the school day 

Please line up outside the Crickets door.  The class teacher or teaching assistant will open the door at 8.45 am.   Children can come into the classroom and join in with a variety of activities.

A typical day in Crickets……

8.45 - 9.10 am

Entry activities, registration and morning meeting.

9.10 – 11.30 am

 A mixture of child-initiated learning and adult-led small group activities.

11.30 –  11.45 am

Story, rhymes and songs

11.45 am

Home time for some children

11.45 - 12.15 pm

Lunch for some children

12.15pm – 2.45pm

End of the Day Routines

We ask parents and carers to wait outside the Crickets door in a queue at the end of the afternoon session.  The class teacher will open the door at 3.15pm and then call each child when she sees an adult is there to collect them.  (Please advise the teacher or teaching assistant on the door in the morning or phone the school office if somebody new is picking up your child, who is different from any of the adults we have permission for.)  If you need to speak to the class teacher at the end of the day, please wait until all of the children have left the Crickets.
